Sometimes, you just need a quick beach trip to reconnect with your inner peace. That's how the couple was feeling at the end of July 2023, so they packed up and headed to the nearest beach that wasn't Virginia Beach (which can get overcrowded and rowdy): Sandbridge. It's about 2.5 hours away from the couple's home, southeast along the Currituck Banks Peninsula at the northern end of the Outer Banks. There's plenty of parking, public beaches, and public bathhouses, plus it's pretty quiet compared to other Virginia beaches. They stayed in one of the few Airbnb listings they could find, which was an apartment located below the house where the owner lived. Upon their arrival, the host greeted them and showed them where everything was. She warned them about the "midges," which were not, as they immediately thought, a slur, but a type of insect that bites. They were woefully under-prepared for the sun, so they had to do some sun hat shopping before they could hit the beach. It ended up being a fun time, and Hunter had no good choices, so he ended up with a hat that featured zebra print (not his style!). But he rocked it. Beach time was glorious, even if the red flags were flying, signaling that the water was dangerous to swim in. They slept, read, and watched windsurfers getting air off-shore. Hunter enjoyed a cold Guinness. The top half of their bodies avoided sunburn; however, the bottom half, despite using sunscreen and a towel cover, did not escape unscathed.
