There was a time in Sarah's life when she baked so often that her family had to beg her to take the treats to school or work to get them out of the house. She doesn't bake that often anymore, but there is still someone in the couple's life who does bake a lot: their sister, Rachel. Rachel is both a chemist by profession, but a baker at heart. It's quite possible that being a chemist makes her a better baker and vice versa. Rachel loves to bake so much that she was running into a similar problem at home, where there wasn't anyone who could eat all the cake she was making. She now volunteers to bake professional-level cakes for children in foster care, which has become an outlet for her passion for baking. Sarah and Hunter enlisted her as the cake artist for their wedding, giving her the unusual directive to decorate the cake with actual LEGO pieces. She happily obliged. The couple loves that the cake was made by someone they know and love. How sweet!

About five minutes away from the couple's home, there's a new little bakery and bubble tea shop called Brecotea Bakery. They have a variety of fresh-baked pastries, some savory and some sweet, that you self-serve onto a wooden tray. Hunter likes to stop there for a treat every once in a while. They thought the vibe of this little cake shop matched Brecotea's.

When the couple is having a shopping day in Richmond's Carytown, Hunter is likely to stop into Kokee Tea for a brown sugar Oreo bubble tea. He always manages to resist the colorful array of macrons in the glass case by the register. Sarah likes going there with him just to marvel at all the anime stuffies, pencil pouches, and other trinkets they squeeze into the tiny tea shop, which are also for sale.

Your Sweet Strawberry

This cute set represents Sarah's nickname, Strawberry, which Hunter has called her ever since they spent an afternoon going through an old box of Sarah's keepsakes and came across something that had "Strawberry Candy Sarah" written on it. That was about five months into dating, and ever since, Sarah has been named Strawberry in Hunter's phone. StrawberryCandySarah@yahoo.com was Sarah's first email address when she was probably about 11. Hunter loves calling Sarah his sweet Strawberry.

Making Banana Pancakes

From the very beginning of their relationship, Hunter was determined to introduce new foods using the same ingredients that were already part of Sarah's limited diet. Sarah had figured out how to make a sugar-free, gluten-free version of banana bread, but Hunter saw the potential for something easier and quicker: banana pancakes. Within four months of meeting, they were settling into their Sunday morning routine of making banana pancakes and watching cartoons together. Sarah even sometimes played Jack Johnson's song, "Banana Pancakes," and they'd dance in the kitchen.

Making Banana Waffles

Banana pancakes are delicious, but Sarah has always been more of a waffle gal. As the novelty of the banana pancakes began to wear off, Hunter went to work perfecting a recipe for banana waffles. They started out with a small waffle iron that could make one at a time, but soon upgraded to a larger press that could make four waffles at once. When he perfected the recipe, banana waffles became the new Sunday morning ritual they looked forward to all week, served up with fried eggs and cubed potatoes crisped in the air fryer. Sarah gifted Hunter a Kitchen Aid mixer for their first Christmas together to make it easier for Hunter to keep making her delicious waffles (that wasn't the only reason, but it is the thing he makes the most with it!).

Hunter's 30th Birthday Party Spread

For Hunter's thirtieth birthday party in December 2024, Sarah threw him a tea party with a light Alice in Wonderland theme. She took the Friday of the party off work to decorate the house, bake homemade treats including Earl Grey tea cookies, spiced chai cookies, and carrot cake cupcakes, and stop by Brecotea for a selection of bakery-made treats. The result was a quite impressive spread of sweet and savory snacks that had Hunter feeling celebrated. His sister, Rachel, also baked him a homemade carrot cake, which he rationed throughout the week after his party to make it last as long as possible.

In their relationship, Sarah is the baker and Hunter is the cook. For Sarah, her love of baking started when she was just going into high school and was gifted a cookbook called Hello Cupcake. It had recipes for the most creative cupcake displays she'd ever seen, and encouraged her to try new baking and decorating challenges at every opportunity. It was admittedly more fun to bake back when she could actually eat what she made, but she still loves to bake for others, especially those who can appreciate how meaningful a gift it is. Every once in a while, she breaks out the cupcake tins and puts on a magical cupcake show for Hunter and other special people in her life.

Early in their relationship, as Sarah learned what Hunter's favorite candy treats were (all of which turned out to be chocolate), she loved surprising him with a candy bar when he least expected it. Zero bars are his absolute favorites, and they aren't the easiest to find (probably because few others agree with him that it's the best candy bar). When she couldn't find one, she has been known to surprise him with Kit Kats, Reese Cups, or specialty chocolate bars in flavors like carrot cake, coffee, or ginger snap.

Hunter has a well-known sweet tooth, but shows impressive restraint. To Sarah, who dreams of eating every maple-frosted donut the world has ever made, watching Hunter say no to dessert at restaurants and most nights at home seems certifiably nuts. She wants to grab him by the collar and shake him while yelling, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CAN EAT SWEETS BUT ARE CHOOSING NOT TO?!" It's quite mature and healthy of Hunter to eat sugar in moderation...most of the time. He's been known to go to BJ's for groceries by himself and come home with a six-pack of giant blueberry muffins, all of which are for him.
