Premise: The character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and often nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimistic and earnest sea sponge, and his underwater friends. Dwelling in the city of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob lives in a two-story pineapple. Instead of taking the logical approach to everyday challenges, SpongeBob lives in a wayward and unconventional way. His good intentions and overzealous approach to life usually create chaos in his underwater world.

Favorite Moment: The joy of rewatching SpongeBob SquarePants together as adults is having the muscle memory re-awakened and realizing how much of the show they both remembered from their childhoods. Rediscovering the episodes they hadn't thought about in years, yet still remembered once reminded, was a lot of fun. As an adult, you also discover how much of the humor in the show is really for adults. Sarah rediscovered the episode where SpongeBob accidentally hosts an all-night rave with a swarm of jellyfish. Hunter rediscovered the episode where SpongeBob and Patrick get Squidward to go jelly-fishing with them as part of their "Best Day Ever" plan, even though he's injured and can't even grip the net (Patrick to Squidward: "FIRMLY GRASP IT" before jamming the net through Squidward's cast). Later in the episode, Squidward time-travels and inadvertently invents jelly-fishing. The episode where Mr. Krabs accidentally panty raids his mother's house is also legendary.

Set Significance:

  • The Krusty Krab: The couple's acquisition of the Krusty Krab brick set (a detailed replica of LEGO 3825, now worth $420!) was one that admittedly came before they were sure of the story they'd tell about it in their museum, because it was just so cool.

  • Doodle Bob and Mr. Krabs: Because the Krusty Krab didn't come with any minifigures, they added Doodle Bob and Mr. Krabs MOC (my own creation) sets to the mix. LEGO brand SpongeBob sets were retired in 2013 and now cost between $100 and over $400. DoodleBob is the crudely drawn counterpart of SpongeBob SquarePants, who was brought to life with the Magic Pencil.

Where It's Streaming: Amazon Prime; the show is still active and released season 15 in July 2024.

Reason They Watched: Did the couple start rewatching SpongeBob episodes with Sunday morning waffles because they needed to justify including the Krusty Krab in their museum exhibit? Perhaps. Did they enjoy it regardless? Yes.
