During a trip to Alexandria to visit Hunter's sister, Rachel, and nephew, Andrew, the couple visited King Street Cats. Andrew was with his dad, Steve, at a hockey game in D.C. Rachel wanted to look for a female kitten at the rescue near her house while it was open (she had promised Andrew she wouldn't actually get a cat without him). They were in search of a new kitten in large part because one of their current cats, Missy, is getting up there in years and has been deeply bonded to Andrew since he was born. Rachel tells the story of how Missy used to sneak into Andrew's crib at night when he was a baby, and they'd catch her on the video feed and have to remove her to make sure she didn't accidentally hurt him.

When the couple visited King Street Cats with Rachel, there were no female kittens to be found (it was a little early for kitten season, after all). So it just became an excellent excuse to pet lots of adorable cats and hear from the volunteers working that day about the cat drama that unfolds between the current cast of characters living there. There was a bloke with a very Irish name, Finnegan, whom Hunter gravitated toward, and a friendly calico that was small, just like the couple's calico, Cali. No cats were to be adopted that day, but petting cats is always a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
