Premise: Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. However, when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned, and it's up to a lone warrior to track down the last dragon and stop the Druun for good.
Favorite Moment: A big theme of the movie is trust. Raya's story begins with betrayal, which results in her father turning to stone. The journey she undertakes to save the world from the Druun requires that she learn to trust again, and enables her to build a community with the outcasts she meets in the different kingdoms. It's a powerful and perhaps wistful commentary on what our society needs to heal from the self-destruction we're currently living through. The only way through the mess is together. And moving together requires some trust.
Set Significance: By the time Raya is born, Kumandra has been divided into five different kingdoms, each named after a part of a dragon (Fang, Spine, Tail, Talon, and Heart). Her family lives in Heart, where the gem containing the magic of the last dragon is protected in the Heart Palace. Raya's family has been the caretaker of the gem for generations. The set also contains Raya's pet (and transportation) armadillo pill bug, Tuk Tuk.
Where It's Streaming: Disney+; it was released in 2021.
Reason They Watched: The couple loves a good animated Disney movie, and particularly enjoys the newer ones coming out that don't revolve around romance or princess tropes. This adventure into Kumandra did not disappoint!
