Premise: Phineas and Ferb is an American animated comedy-musical sitcom that centers on two stepbrothers, Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher, their sister Candace, their pet platypus Perry (who doubles as a secret agent), and their adventures during summer vacation.
Their Reason for Watching: In full disclosure, the couple has not watched most of Phineas and Ferb, but they bonded over remembering it as one of the best kids' shows on TV at the time they were starting to grow up (though they never really outgrew cartoons). They agreed that the show had some of the best original songs of any show, stemming from the silly and imaginative spirit of the show. Early in their relationship, they watched the Halloween Special around Halloween time (September 24, to be exact!), but mostly, they've sought out music videos whenever a song comes to mind and they get a hankering for a nostalgic laugh.
Favorite Song: The song they've gotten the biggest kick out of remembering is "There's a Platypus Controlling Me." It's a hip-hop song performed by Doofenshmirtz when he accidentally DJs a party that his daughter and her friends are having in a junkyard, while also locked in a battle with Perry the Platypus, who's controlling Doofenshmirtz's movements using a remote control. It's a "strange set of circumstances" best told through the actual song lyrics:
Now let me sum it up
It was a strange set of circumstances
(Strange set of circumstances?)
I fell down the hill
I got glue on my hands now I got records on my fingers
And I just can't stop
(Don't stop, don't stop)
Well I would if I was able
There's a platypus controlling me he's underneath the table
(There's a platypus controlling him—WHAAAT?)
To make it even better, there's a part of the song that gets existential about power and control, and the punk rock kids at the party start to list off all the things, like Doofenschmirtz's "metaphorical" platypus that are holding them down:
Oh, I get it, platypus is a metaphor for whatever is keeping you down
Like, corporations are a platypus
The government's a platypus
Society's a platypus
My parents are a platypus
The media's a platypus
It's all just propaganda
The song is both ridiculous and catchy, and the couple loves singing it to each other randomly.
Significance of the Set: There's no better set to represent this song than Perry the Platypus and Dr. Doof, whose hands the couple has affixed brick records to.
Where It's Streaming: Disney+; the show is still active, with season five arriving in 2025.
