Premise: One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young man whose body gains rubber-like properties after eating a Devil Fruit, as he gathers a crew of diverse pirates called the Straw Hats to search for the legendary treasure, the "One Piece," and become the next King of the Pirates. The show has over 1,100 episodes and is still ongoing.
Reason They Watched: Sarah first learned about the show when she saw that LEGO was releasing sets based on it. Hunter watched part of the show long before he met Sarah, and was more than happy to introduce Sarah to it. They were on the fence about starting the show when their Cowboy Bebop set for their Anime table display broke for the umpteenth time while Hunter was trying to assemble it, leaving a hole in the table that they needed to fill. So they began watching One Piece that same night.
Favorite Moment: They are still early in the show (hard not to be early in the show when it has over 1,100 episodes!), but Sarah is enjoying the bizarre nature of the show's characters. The main character is an agent of chaos, striding through life as though nothing truly terrible can happen to him. That keeps things interesting. Hunter is enjoying rediscovering the show with Sarah. He doesn't remember much of it, since he watched it so long ago. It's a new experience for both of them.
Where It's Streaming: The anime, which premiered in 1997, is available to stream on Crunchyroll. The live-action version, which began airing in 2023, is now streaming on Netflix.
