Sarah wasn’t planning to have a bachelorette party at all, but when Vanessa mentioned it to her neighbors, Lok and Emily, they decided to plan one for her. Sarah's sister-in-law, Rachel, drove down from Alexandria to join.
The adventure started at Loving Acre Farms’ animal sanctuary, where they met a memorable cast of characters: goats, pigs, cows, chickens, an inter-species duck family, a chunky rabbit, sheep, and llamas — all with hilarious names, like Russel Crow the rooster. They watched Henny Penny, an 18-year-old arthritic pig, happily sip a bottle of Sunny D, and heard incredible rescue stories, like llamas saved from a murder-for-hire scene and a pig who survived both gunshot and stab wounds. They fed the animals buckets of fruit and veggies. Sarah's favorite moment was feeding a whole tomato to two cows, which splattered all over the two goats waiting for their bite down below. An injured sheep, which “talked” with the farm owner through call-and-response baaing, wandered freely and kept stealing snacks from the food cart.
Vanessa made me the most incredible LEGO “Bride to Be” sash and a matching crown, which Sarah wore throughout the farm tour. While they ate a potluck lunch, Henny Penny picked up a picnic table while scratching her back and munched an entire bag of celery. Afterwards, the group headed back to Sarah's house for craft time. As they drove into the neighborhood, we passed my fiancé, Hunter, heading out to his own bachelor party — a decidedly quieter evening of playing Magic: The Gathering with his friends. Vanessa, Emily, and Lok surprised Rachel with fresh flowers from a local farm and a slice of chocolate cake to celebrate her birthday the next day. It was a lovely day filled with the joys of community, human and animal. Hunter, who adores goats, was thoroughly jealous. The couple will go back to visit the farm after the wedding.
