Premise: The title refers to the story's main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who, in an earlier age, created the One Ring, allowing him to rule the other Rings of Power given to men, dwarves, and elves in his campaign to conquer all of Middle-earth. From humble beginnings in the Shire, a hobbit land reminiscent of the English countryside, the story spans across Middle-earth, following the quest to destroy the One Ring, primarily seen through the eyes of the hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Aiding the hobbits are the wizard Gandalf, the men Aragorn and Boromir, the elf Legolas, and the dwarf Gimli, who unite as the Company of the Ring to rally the Free Peoples of Middle-earth against Sauron's armies and give Frodo a chance to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom.

Favorite Moment: Sarah will never live down the fact that Hunter watched all the Harry Potter movies with her because she asked him to, but Sarah couldn't even finish the first Lord of the Rings movie without falling asleep. She feels guilty about it, but maintains that any three-hour film is hard to get through now that she's "getting older" (the longest Harry Potter movie is only two hours and forty minutes, which is a significant difference, according to Sarah). Hunter hasn't given up on her yet, and is convinced that he will convert her into a fan (or die trying).

To view this set, be sure to visit the Literary Table outside!

Set Significance: Hunter loves The Lord of the Rings, so Sarah wanted to ensure it was included in their museum exhibit (especially since Harry Potter received a whole themed table).

  • Legolas & Gimli: Hunter wanted the Gimli Brickheadz (not really the Legolas one, but they came together) because of a complicated inside joke with his DND friends (they'll spare you the details). He refused to buy it for himself because he's a saver, but Sarah had no qualms gifting it to him for Christmas.

  • Hobbit House: This set reminded them of the hobbit houses in the Shire, and was too cute to pass over.

  • Balrog's Book Nook: Sarah surprised Hunter with this set when it came out, late into their wedding planning process, as a promise that she would one day watch all the movies with him (without falling asleep).

Where It's Streaming: HBO Max; the third movie in the trilogy was released in 2003.

Reason They Watched (But Haven't Finished Yet): Hunter wanted to share Lord of the Rings with Sarah, since it's one of his favorite movie series. Sarah thinks his desire to share it with her is sweet. She's still trying to summon the energy to stay awake for the final two movies. Maybe they'll have the time and energy after the wedding...
