Interaction Rating: 3 / 5 (interaction with the set is okay, but only with help from an adult)

Premise: The young adult animated series follows a teenage girl named Kipo Oak, who is searching for her father after being forced to flee her burrow, and must explore the post-apocalyptic surface world, ruled by mutated animals, to find him. Along the way, she befriends the human survivors Wolf and Benson, as well as the mutant animals Dave and Mandu.

Favorite Moment: The show is full of different mutes (mutant animals) who came out of an apocalyptic event that caused creatures to mutate into larger, smarter versions of their species, and render humans lower on the food chain. May human communities fled underground where they built burrows to hide from the mutes. One of those groups of mutes is the Timbercats, led by Yumyan Hammerpaw, who carries an ax and loves a good flapjack breakfast. Kipo and her friends get mixed up with the Timbercats when they encounter them on their journey, and have to help the cats find Yumyan, who left to fight the Mega Monkey (a massive, mutated monkey that terrorizes their village). Kipo and her friends find Yumyan hiding up in the treetops, chasing a butterfly, too ashamed to admit that he hadn't been brave enough to fight the Mega Monkey.

Set Significance:

  • Observatory: On their journey to find Kipo's dad, they seek out the Las Vistas Observatory, which is controlled by the Newton Wolves, who wear turtlenecks and love science. Kipo wants to use the giant telescope to try to find the burrow her dad might be hiding in. To gain the trust of the wolves, the gang has to act like a pack and pretend to be knowledgeable about physics (which they are not).

  • Scorpions: One of the most feared mutes is the Deathstalker, a giant scorpion that can detect heartbeats, knock you out with its venomous tail, and drag you back to its lair to devour you. The gang has to fight deathstalkers on their journey.

  • Dragonfly: One of the gang's primary methods of travel when not on foot is on the backs of giant dragonflies (not dissimilar in size from the ones that lived on Earth 70 million years ago).
