In the Valley of Giants

"Wood Cabin"
"Wood Cabin"

2,097 pieces  |  Funwhole: FH9001

On loan from the museum of Vanessa Reyes & Mike Alfare

Interaction Rating: 1 / 5 (interaction with the set is discouraged)

Premise: Hilda is an 11-year-old girl who grew up with her mother in a cabin on the edge of the woods near the walled-in city of Trolberg. Throughout the series, she and her deerfox Twig, later accompanied by an elf named Alfur and friends David and Frida, go on many adventures interacting with and befriending the mysterious animals, people, and spirits that live in and around the city of Trolberg.

Favorite Moments: Sarah's favorite moment is when Hilda gets swapped out for a troll child (literally changing bodies) and has to figure out how to change back into a human and get back home. Meanwhile, Hilda's mom is taking care of the troll baby and trying desperately to find a way inside the mountain where the trolls live. In this world, humans and trolls despise each other, but Hilda learns a lot about the similarities between the groups and uses that knowledge to help create peace between them. Hunter's favorite moment is when Twig, Hilda's deerfox (essentially a pet dog) shows up with an army of other deer fox to help save the day when Hilda and her mom get trapped inside a fairy mound that they can't escape alone.

Bug Boy

"Ladybug"
"Ladybug"

73 pieces  |  Knew Built: KY80040

Assembled by Vanessa Reyes, March 2025

Interaction Rating: 4 / 5 (interaction with the set is encouraged, but use extra care)

Set Significance:

  • Wood Cabin: Before Hilda and her mom moved to Trolberg, they lived outside the city walls, which are surrounded by watchtowers keeping people in the city and trolls out. People man the towers and ring the alarm bells when trolls get too close to the wall, scaring them off. Hilda and her mom never have trouble with the trolls, but the giants that roam the valley are too tall to see what they are stepping on. One day, their wooden cabin is reduced to splinters when a giant accidentally steps on it. That is the impetus for their move to the city, which enables the show's story to unfold.

  • Ladybug: The ladybug represents Hilda's friend, David, who always seems to have a bug of some kind (usually a ladybug) in his hair or on his shirt. It's a charming element of his personality that adds to his friendliness. All the characters have charming details about their personality like this.

The Woodman's House

"Woodland Elf House"
"Woodland Elf House"

428 pieces  |  Brick Panda: B28-40

Assembled by Mike Alfare, June 2025

Interaction Rating: 4 / 5 (interaction with the set is encouraged, but use extra care)

Set Significance (continued):

  • Woodman's House: The house built into a tree reminded the couple of the Woodman, a neighbor of Hilda and her mom before they moved to Trolberg. He is strange and laid-back to a fault, and both get Hilda out of some dangerous situations as often as he puts her in them.

Where It's Streaming: Netflix; the finale aired in 2023.

Reason They Watched: They started watching Hilda because it was recommended to them by Netflix, and Sarah had heard some buzz about it. It quickly became one of their favorite shows, the kind that makes you want to cozy up with a warm beverage, a cat on your lap, and be at peace.
