To support a fundraiser for their friend, Vanessa's artistic swimming team, the couple attended their first Flying Squirrels baseball game together. It also happened to be Hunter's first professional baseball game! They navigated to the wrong place at first (thanks, Hunter's GPS), so they missed the first inning. Of course, that was the only inning where either team scored points, but they weren't really there for the baseball game anyway. They spent most of the game catching up with Vanessa, her husband, Mike, and other friends and swimmates who were at the game. Marta, with whom Sarah worked at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and who is also Vanessa's swim teammate, stopped by for a few minutes with her daughter, Eleanor. Hunter enjoyed a loaded ballpark hot dog, and they participated in the traditional seventh-inning stretch. They were amused by some of the silly games that were played in-between innings, like the guy in the flamingo costume that threw t-shirts into the stand, the Mixed Nut Race run by people wearing various nut costumes, and the kids wearing bun suits that had to race to make a giant stuffed sandwich and jump on the pile as the top bun. After the game, which the Squirrels lost by two points, they stuck around to see their first-ever fireworks show together. Hunter is usually with friends on July 4th, since it's the birthday of one of his DND buddies. Any other time they've tried to see fireworks, it has always been thwarted by rain or other universal forces. After a delay that had the Flying Squirrels mascot, Nutzy, trying to pump the crowd up with Miley Cyrus, the show finally started; Hunter and Sarah could officially say they saw fireworks (other than the ones they see anytime they're together).
The fireworks were so bright, Hunter had to wear his sunglasses.
Hunter and Sarah caught their first July 4th fireworks show together in 2025 with waterfront seats. It was a spectacular show that left the barge launching the fireworks on fire afterwards.
