Not too far from Sarah's house is Pocahontas State Park, Virginia's largest state park. Before they'd met, Sarah discovered a great loop hike called the Beaver Lake Trail, which she took Hunter to one day in early April. They also brought Sarah's dog, Ryder, who was still young enough at the time to walk the whole trail (but wouldn't be by the same time the following year). The trail is a mix of terrain that circles a gorgeous little lake, featuring natural lily pads and other aquatic vegetation. At several points, the trail leads you to elevated wooden platforms that help you cross swampy areas often inundated with stagnant water. There's a gentle stream to cross about halfway through, providing the perfect pit stop for a thirsty pup. The one thing you won't readily find on the trail is beavers. You're apparently more likely to see a beaver on a suburban sidewalk than on the Beaver Lake Trail (based on the fact that Sarah's mom saw a beaver on a suburban sidewalk one day). They felt happy and just the right amount of exhausted after their hike, and would return frequently to this trail on beautiful spring and fall days. They even spent Easter 2023 hiking this trail together, discussing everything under the sun and enjoying tranquil moments, simply listening to the breeze rustle through the leaves.
