Premise: Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. When Stereotypical Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) develops negative thoughts about the meaning of life and her mortality, Barbie and Ken embark on a journey to the real world, where they encounter the complex realities of gender, power, and control.
Favorite Moment: The couple enjoyed the Barbie Movie for its humorous yet honest portrayal of a gendered society. The speech that America Ferrara delivers is powerful and memorable. Hunter wholeheartedly agreed with the speech's message that being a woman in our society requires impossible contradictions and isn't fair. His feminism, which came out on their first date, has always been endearing to her. They also enjoyed Ken's discovery of patriarchy and how he thought it was about horses.
Set Significance: Sarah had her eye on the Barbie Dream House set from MEGA Blok (a brand Hunter hated as a child, but that's neither here nor there), but it was close to $100. They couldn't justify it until Sarah found an auction going for one on eBay and managed to snag it for less than half the market price. Hunter was very supportive, but made it clear that he wouldn't be the one to put it together (going back to his childhood hatred of MEGA Blok).
Where It's Streaming: Netflix; it was released in 2023.
Reason They Watched: Hunter was game to see the Barbie Movie when it came out, but he mainly wanted to flatter Sarah, who had been eager to see it after hearing reviews from friends who had seen it. They even took a rare trip to a movie theater to see it in August and were fortunate to catch the matinee, as the showing after theirs had to evacuate due to a fight. (They know this because one of Sarah's mom's friends was in that later showing and reported back about it, only at the time, the theater was full of people evacuating, thinking there was an active shooter in the building. Yikes!)
