The Original Firebender

Replica of LEGO 80112: "Auspicious Dragon"
Replica of LEGO 80112: "Auspicious Dragon"

767 pieces  |  YEECHAO: T2088

Assembled by Sarah Wilkinson, Hunter Williams, Dustin Williams; October 2024

Interaction Rating: 3 / 5 (interaction with the set is okay, but only with help from an adult)

Premise: The series follows the journey of Aang, the "Avatar," who is the only person able to master all four elements (water, air, earth, and fire). Aang must learn to control his powers and bring balance to a world threatened by the Fire Nation, which has waged a century-long war against the other three nations.

Appa

1,479 pieces  |  Unbranded

Assembled by Hunter Williams, January 2025

Interaction Rating: 4 / 5 (interaction with the set is encouraged, but use extra care)

Favorite Moment: There are so many great moments throughout the show, but both Sarah and Hunter agree that one of their favorites is when Sokka and Zuko, on their way to break Sokka's dad out of the infamous Boiling Rock prison, are attempting to get to know each other. Zuko has only recently switched from fighting for the Fire Nation to fighting against them, and so it's a tentative alliance. They begin discussing the war and Zuko's decision to leave the Fire Nation, as well as his relationship with Mai. Sokka chimes in that his girlfriend, Eywa, turned into the moon (which happened in the show when she had to sacrifice herself to save the moon spirit!). Zuko's awkward response is, after a beat, "That's rough, buddy." The line is an underreaction to the statement and somewhat out of character (Zuko doesn't use the word "buddy" again memorably in the show). They both enjoyed watching Zuko's character arc from vengeful villain to remorseful warrior for good.

Yue the Moon Spirit

934 pieces  |  JIE STAR: JJ9094

Assembled by Vanessa Reyes, January 2025

Interaction Rating: 3 / 5 (interaction with the set is okay, but only with help from an adult)

Set Significance:

  • Auspicious Dragon: This replica of the retired LEGO set 80112 represents the original Firebendersdragonswho Aang and Zuko have to find to try and restore Zuko's firebending after he loses the fire of his anger and hatred for the Avatar, which fueled his abilities previously.

  • Appa: This set represents the flying bison that is Aang's companion, helping the gang travel between different kingdoms as they attempt to win the war. The episodes where Appa is kidnapped and the gang can't find him are some of the most heart-wrenching of the show. Appa is also Zuko's ostrich horse, which he stole from an Earth Kingdom family while he was hiding out and trying to find the Avatar (when he was still evil). The tea table represents Zuko's Uncle Iroh, who is Hunter's favorite character. He is known for his wisdom and his love for a nice cup of tea.

The Fortuneteller

Building Facade with Red Door and Lanterns

420 pieces  |  Unbranded

Assembled by Sarah Wilkinson, January 2025

Interaction Rating: 3 / 5 (interaction with the set is okay, but only with help from an adult)

Set Significance continued...

  • Moon Flower: This set represents Eywa, the Princess of the Southern Water Tribe, who sacrifices herself to save the moon and spirit and becomes the light of the moon during a battle with the Fire Nation that threatens to destroy the balance between sun and moon, and therefore, Firebenders and Waterbenders (and the whole world).

  • Building Facade: The facade reminded them of the Fortune Teller's dwelling when the gang stopped over in Makapu Village. When the Fortune Teller proves wrong about the danger of the town's volcano, the gang has to help save the city.

Where It's Streaming: Netflix; the show's finale aired in 2008.

Reason They Watched: They'd both watched it before and adored it. They wanted to experience watching (and later rewatching it) together.
