Premise: Luca, a 13-year-old boy, experiences an unforgettable seaside summer on the Italian Riviera filled with gelato, pasta, and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but a deeply held secret threatens all the fun: his friend is a sea monster from another world, just below the ocean's surface.
Favorite Moment: The couple enjoys their fair share of Disney and Pixar movies, and Luca was one they watched pretty early in their relationship. It is a joyous movie of childhood exploration and friendship. Both of them loved the fixation of the young characters on Vespas as the ultimate ticket to freedom and adventure, going so far as to make their own. And when that didn't work, they entered a bicycling relay to try and win the money to buy a Vespa. They also really enjoyed the representation of having an amputee character, as they have a friend who uses prosthetics and had never seen a character like him in a movie before.
Set Significance: There was no other way to represent this movie except with a LEGO Vespa, which the couple has named Senor Vespa after the one by the same name in the show (even if that one is blue).
Where It's Streaming: Disney+; the movie was released in 2021.
Reason They Watched: They were looking for something light and upbeat, as well as a movie that was new to both of them. They chose Luca, and didn't regret it.
